Winner of the 2013 Edgar(R) Award for Best Paperback Original A genre-defying blend of crime writing and science fiction.Alexandra Alter, The New York Times The explosive final installment in the Edgar® Award winning Last Policeman series. "A genre-defying blend of crime writing and science fiction." -Alexandra Alter, The New York Times Shenandoah shares her story in her book, Garbage Bag Suitcase. Describing the book is so hard because you don’t want to use words like, “good,” or “great,” or “captivating.” Because although it is, those words are not grave or weighty enough to describe the contents contained within its pages. No one cared if I disappeared forever.” It was the first time she remembers feeling that way, but it was certainly not the last. Shen says that lying in that hospital bed, she wished each time she fell asleep that she wouldn’t wake up. She spent weeks in the hospital, with only the occasional check-in from her foster family. That was the last time Shen ever heard from her. “This could have turned out much better if you’d have died,” it read. She woke up alone in the hospital, with a letter from her mother on her bedside table. At 17, she was in a terrible car accident. Shenandoah was still alone in the world, with nobody to love her. The pattern of neglect and isolation continued. They provided a roof over her head and food, but not much else. Shen’s foster parents used her as a a source of income. Unfortunately, once in foster care, her story didn’t get much better. At times, her stuffed animals were her only friends, and her mother and stepfather starved her as a means of discipline. Prior to that her life had been filled with neglect, abuse, and isolation. Shenandoah Chefalo was 13 when she first went into foster care. Often, the songwriting dance may fall somewhere in between, with the songwriter mixing moments of inspiration with the hard work of playing around with the words until, finally, they sound-and feel-just right. There may be a long struggle to turn the words into the final piece that the musicians are happy with. Other times, the refrains might not come so naturally. Sometimes, when musicians create a song, it flows easily, words quickly scribbled on paper (or typed) soon becoming fully formed lyrics begging to be sung. In other words, it needs to get heard-and enjoyed-by a lot of people. Before a song can seep into the public consciousness and impact us, it has to get imagined, written, produced, played, and released out into the world. Beloved morrison6/28/2023 So readers of this review don't think I am picking on Toni Morrison, Charles Frazier's self-read of Cold Mountain suffers from the same deficiencies. Unfortunately, Beloved is only available as an audiobook read by Ms Morrison. Frankly, Ms Morrison is not a professional reader and subscribers are cautioned to listen to the sample before purchasing this audiobook. There are no pauses between the paragraphs or shifts in the time periods. There is no differentiation in voice, so one doesn't know what character is talking or thinking. I cannot understand Ms Morrison's pronunciation of many of the words. This is the third audiobook I have purchased which is read aloud by its author, and it will be the last. I have just started listening to this book, and have decided that I will have to buy a printed copy and read its text concurrently while listening in order to make it to the end. |
