Mistress of rome goodreads6/26/2023 The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. “Most people are, Scot, when you finally see them.” Goodreads: Em and the Big Hoom 2) TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee Between Em, the mother, driven frequently to hospital after her failed suicide attempts, and The Big Hoom, the father, trying to hold things together as best he could, they tried to be a family. In a one-bedroom-hall-kitchen in Mahim, Bombay, through the last decades of the twentieth century, lived four love-battered Mendeses: mother, father, son and daughter. The essex serpent book review6/25/2023 There's no plot, no character development, no action - pretty much nothing except pretentious allegory spread over almost six hours. Looking at this cast you might think you're in for a treat. Ultimately, while "The Essex Serpent" has its moments of brilliance, its lackluster middle section and predictable ending prevent it from reaching its full potential. The production design is also noteworthy, with the show beautifully capturing the atmospheric setting of rural England. The show boasts an impressive cast, led by the talented and versatile actress, Claire Danes. Despite these flaws, "The Essex Serpent" does have its strengths. Any tension and intrigue that were built up in the early episodes are lost, and the ending feels unsatisfying and generic. The final few episodes of the series are particularly disappointing, as the story descends into a predictable and formulaic soap opera. However, as the plot progresses, the show loses its way, and the middle section drags on with little payoff. The series successfully establishes a suspenseful and intriguing atmosphere in the first few episodes, drawing in viewers with its eerie and mysterious storyline. "The Essex Serpent" begins with great promise, but unfortunately fails to maintain its initial momentum. Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott6/25/2023 But their goal was to do it better than anyone else. When Ada and Minna Everleigh arrived in Chicago in late 1899, they were already well-versed in the running of a turn-of-the-century brothel. To Chicago, Illinois, to be exact, and the famed red light district known as the Levee. Joking aside, I greatly enjoyed both books the former gives great short summaries of many of the most famous Madams of the Old West, and the latter transitions you smoothly into the early 20th century. There are several conclusions I could draw from this, but it’s probably best to let it lie. First Best Friend’s mother sends me Pistol Packin’ Madams, and then my own mother gives me Sin in the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys, and the Battle for America’s Soul. It’s been a banner year around here for books about prostitutes.
